Getting Stupid Over The Years
Upon leaving high school, whether you go to college or not, I've found that I've forgotten a great majority of what I've learned. I remember some things, but I honestly believe that the only reason why I recall these things is because it was something I wanted to remember or had a personal interest in. For example, everything art, music, computer, writing etc... related, I remember fairly well. The same goes for Spanish. I took the language course throughout my late middle school days & all throughout high school so having all of that time invested on the subject makes it easy to remember what I've learned. However, despite all of that time devoted to the language and practicing it on a regular basis, even to this current day, there are still many things that I have forgotten and have to re-teach myself if I want to hold a conversation.
This same thing happened to me with some of the things I've learned in college. I call this getting dumb. I'm not saying that I am not an intelligent being or that you aren't intelligent either but over time we shed certain pieces of information to make room for information we are more interested in instead of collecting it all and keeping it all and having it feasible all the time. I'm not sure about the science behind this or why it happens but it's just something I've always noticed from my personal experience. I don't understand why I had to forget the things that I learned in history, biology etc... I enjoyed those classes, but their criteria/curriculum don't have a place in my life. I don't find that reason enough to discard anything I've learned from those classes though. So why exactly did I delete these things from my life? Was this a conscious decision, subconscious? Is it the brains natural behavior or what? But anyways, the point is... I call this getting stupid over the years because if we learn something and we don't access it or apply it to current events, it some how goes into this limbo and gets lost until we either re-teach ourselves or randomly brush up on the topic and a little spark clicks and we remember said fact etc...
So I thought to myself, is there a way to counter-act this? Perhaps you could go to school again or re-study everything but I don't have the time for that and I'm sure many others don't. So what if you just do something small. So I came up with a challenge.
The challenge that I am talking about is that when you are on your computer staring at cat photos or perhaps reading blogs like this, I challenge you to take 5 minutes out of your day and surf the internet and learn something. Now you could argue that we're always learning via experience and chance etc... but I want you to intentionally go some place where there is factual info, educational topics etc... and learn something. Maybe do a blog or video about what you learned and something interesting about said topic.
I follow several facebook page and youtube channels that are strictly dedicated to spreading knowledge, science, quick facts, new discoveries etc... and that nurture of educating myself makes me feel like I am doing my brain a good favor and exercise. Granted, these might not be the same things I learned in school but they are things that interest me or have some value to my life etc... so I challenge you and urge you to just take some time out of your busy life and learn something new!
