The Time I Talked About Justin Bieber
8:35 PMThe Time I Talked About Justin Bieber
Before I get into this discussion, I would just like to point out that you get two blogs in one day. Holy crap. Look at you. So blessed. ;)
Now let's get into this because this topic is HOTT.
Alright so I think it's safe to say that if you're reading this you know who Justin Bieber is. You may not listen to his music or be a fan, but you recognize his name, maybe what he does, and have some form of opinion on him.
I remember it clearly when the world went about its business. Suddenly this Belieber train ran through and this song called Baby was on every radio station every other 10 minutes. The world was chaotic in this moment. There was a war between fans and haters. There were hordes of tweens putting anyone on blast if they said anything about this kid that was not in their favor.
I'm 99% sure that girls around that time and age group would hit puberty from listening to his music, let alone from reading his name.
At this time I had no idea who this person was. I heard the song in public places and his name was spamming my Facebook feed just like the "Paris Attack" was spamming yours not too long ago (assuming you're reading this in 2015). I rolled up my sleeves and did a little tippity-typing of this Justin Bieber person and first search result is the music video. Whenever I look up a song or something, my first thing to do is to look at the views and then I listen to it.
On a side note here - I don't judge music solely on its views. If I see a song that I haven't heard before and it has a lot of views I assume the song is good or at least popular for some reason and so I will listen to it on impulse to make my judgement. However, I digress... there are MILLIONS of songs out there who have little to no views that sound AMAZING and deserve the recognition of the hits you can easily name right now. So if you see a song that you haven't heard and it only has 300K views or 2Mill... please give it a chance. Honestly, some of my favorite music is music that nobody even knows about. I feel like a hipster saying that but unlike most hipsters, I actually WANT people to listen to the music I like. I feel like those musicians deserve the fame/$$$ that other people are getting and to see someone become successful makes me happy.
So I listen to this video and instantly feel like a pedophile. This little Canadian sensation has the little bowl cut side fringe style thing going on. Not quite skater boy but I can see why the girls found him charming, though personally he's not my style. I gave the song a second listen just to see if maybe it would grow on me. It's rare that I find a song that I don't like so if and when I do, I always give the song a few listens and I always come back to it in the future because some songs just grow on you. Music is a funny thing. Some songs can instantly reel you in and others creep up on you because of a certain situation or emotion you're feeling. Sometimes a song you dislike ends up being something you like as you age and develop new interests or tastes. However, even after a few listens by choice (and a few more by force on the radio/public areas) my thoughts did not waver. I didn't like the song.
Eventually he released other songs so once again, I gave those a try and the same thing happened. At first I thought maybe I was having a music crisis and I was becoming the adult who hated the music of the younger generations. I quickly dismissed that thought because I loved all of the other music that was being released. I also knew plenty of people in real life and online who also shared my same distaste for Justin Bieber's music and/or style/persona.
I let go and admit defeat. Now, to the Beliebers I guess I was considered a hater. I didn't hate Justin Bieber, but I didn't like his music. While millions of girls are getting goosebumps, I'm yawning.
Several years go by. I mean a REALLY long time goes by. Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are breaking up. Bieber is doing stupid stuff in public and getting himself into trouble...you name it. I'm still not really into him but I was a little curious about what each of them were doing musically based off of the relationship. So Selena has Come And Get It out and who knows what's going on these days. Are they together again? Just friends? Whatever...not like it changes my life any, right? None of my business. GG.
Well all of a sudden I hear this dope song and it has Diplo and Skrillex in it. I listen to a lot of trance, progressive house, house, drum n bass, dubstep, chillstep, liquid drum n bass...basically everything grouped up under EDM/Electronic and I even get into industrial/goth stuff. So I hear this song and I fall in love with it immediately -- but I did not realize that it had Justin Bieber in it until I saw the music video. You can listen to the song here.
At this moment I told myself that I didn't like Justin Bieber but that I liked this song and that he just happened to sing it. So that was my way of still being this little hater and cracking Bieber jokes with all the other haters but yet I was jamming out to this 45 times a day and I still do right now.
Well then this guy releases more songs and since I liked this one, I figured I'd give the others a go. It's at this point in time where all of the Beliebers throw hate at the haters, not because of them hating on him or being haters but because like me, they were converting over to fans and were either in denial or just going full commando and the long-term fans were throwing a fit because for the longest time a large majority of people were like "Bieber sucks!" And all of a sudden they're like "ERMEGERD DIS IS ERMERZING!" And -sigh- I'm one of those people who greatly disliked his music and personality but fell in love with this new music.
These are the songs that I've been living for. Take a listen.
So these songs are pretty dope in my opinion. I can't deny that I like them. I can jam out to them over and over and a lot of people think it's unfair that someone can dislike his music for so long and then all of a sudden like them.
But let me say this, if that's how you feel as a long-term Belieber fan person..then that's fine. Grats to you for sticking to someone for their entire career. Here's your gold sticker that you feel entitled to.
How many of you hated a vegetable or food as a kid and even though you would try it at dinner, you still spit it out or pushed it off to the side and hated it? I think we all had SOMETHING we disliked no matter how many times we tried to like it or refused to eat it. Then one day as an adult something changes and it suddenly tastes good. There are still some foods that I hated as a kid that I still hate today. However, there are a handful of foods that I hated and now I absolutely love them. Likewise, there are things I loved as a child that I think taste absolutely disgusting now. I think this same thing applies to music.
If anything, you should be glad that some of us are converting. I'd also like to say that I never thought he wasn't successful or talented. Obviously he is considering his wealth and view counts and popularity...he just wasn't my cup of tea.
For some reason the people he's working with are creating the right kind of brew of tea that I can sip on and get addicted to. I don't expect him to keep this sound forever, but I will ride the train as far as it will take us for the mean time.
So Bieber has a reputation of being a bad boy now. He went from the adorable boy next door to tattoo bad boy hunk. I still don't think he's attractive. I think his tattoos are cool and I think he's made some bad decisions in life, but I don't find him attractive. Celebrities get a lot of flack for making mistakes. The world will put a single person on blast if they get caught doing something and its spreads like wildfire on the internet. I guarantee if you're reading this you have your fair share of skeletons in a closet and if one of those ever slipped out onto the internet... imagine how you'd feel if you were the one on blast getting chewed out by strangers from literally - all over the world. People who don't even know YOU would be telling you to commit suicide and that they hope you and your mother get cancer. Of course those are loose "threats" that people on the internet seem to throw around carelessly...but some people get SO intense and violent online...it's actually terrifying. But we all know those same people don't have the balls to say those things in person to that person.
So Bieber releases this song. It's much slower than the last few but when you give it a listen and you listen to the message...I gotta feel bad for him. I think people forget that celebrities are people, too. We all make mistakes and we're not invincible. Being a celebrity has to suck in many ways because you make the same mistake that 'normal' people make and you get annihilated over it while the rest of us can sleep peacefully and move on like it didn't happen.
I don't think being a celebrity is an excuse or reason to do bad things or act out inappropriately but you can't expect someone to be perfect. We all rebel and act out in some fashion or another and I think he's growing up and realizing the errors of his ways and this is his way of apologizing and cutting himself open to show people that he's human and to forgive him.
So to conclude this blog, for a long time I disliked Justin Bieber. I'm not a big enough fan to proudly wear his t-shirt or buy a notebook with his face on it. I can confidently say that I like the recent music he's been making and that I hope he learns from his mistakes and improves his character. If you are a hater, that's fine if you dislike his music or style, but don't bully people and don't insult people who are more successful than you are.
